According to ComicBook.com, the Monsterverse is continuing to make waves in streaming after the Apple TV second season release of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The resulting rise has also revitalized the franchise’s other works, such as 2024 film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, putting it in the top ten for top movies on HBO Max.
ComicBook.com reported that Monarch’s new premiere has beat Shrinking and Hijack for a top spot on Apple TV, and the resurgence of Godzilla x Kong on HBO Max beat out films such as Happy Death Day, Mortal Kombat, and The Watchers.
mxdwn previously reported on the series’s season two release date of February 27 and Apple’s orders for future spinoffs and installments in the Monsterverse franchise. With the addition of new beasts in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, along with the return of old favorites, it’s not difficult to see how the series has kept the franchise in the top ten – even across different streaming platforms.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters revolves around half-siblings Kentaro (Ren Watanabe; 461 Days of Bento) and Cate Randa (Anna Sawai; Pachinko, Shōgun) as they investigate their missing father’s hidden connections with covert organization Monarch, who monitor the giant monsters known as Titans. Secondarily, a converging timeline focuses on Monarch’s early development through scientists Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto; Kate, Rental Family) and Bill Randa (Anders Holm; Champions, Workaholics). Tying the two stories together is former U.S. Army Colonel Lee Shaw, played by Kurt Russell (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) in the former timeline and Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Mirror) in the latter.
Following the first season’s harrowing finale battle with the Monsterverse Titans revealing the time-bending properties of Hollow Earth, the protagonists enter season two with the debut of a new big bad; “Titan X,” via ComicBook.com, has been theorized to have been a new take on Toho Co.’s classic character “Biollante,” however they only share base similarities. Titan X resembles a deadly aquatic dragon, while Biollante was originally a fusion monster created from human cells, plant cells, and Godzilla’s own genetic material. Despite the notable differences, the Titan is sure to be an emerging threat as this season brings back the iconic Kong in its Skull Island setting.
As stated prior, Apple is working on an associated show to the series’ universe following Monarch’s success and ComicBook.com reported that Legendary is working on a third installment of the Godzilla x Kong franchise anticipated for 2027.
