HBO has ordered The Chain, an eight-episode limited series written and executive produced by Damon Lindelof (Star Trek, The Hunt), according to an official Warner Bros. Discovery press release. The project marks Lindelof’s first series under his two-year overall deal with HBO, which began in September 2025. The press release confirms that Lindelof is adapting the series alongside Emmy-nominated studio Media Res, based on Adrian McKinty’s New York Times bestselling novel.
According to Warner Bros. Discovery, The Chain brings together Lindelof, known for The Leftovers and Watchmen, with executive producers Carly Wray (Watchmen, Mad Dogs), Breannah Gibson (The Leftovers, Lost), Michael Ellenberg (The Morning Show, Shantaram), Lindsey Springer (Pachinko, Big Little Lies), and Shane Salerno (Avatar: The Way of Water, Armageddon). Francesca Orsi, HBO’s executive vice president and head of drama programming, described the project as “emotionally daring” and said the network is proud to continue its partnership with Lindelof. The press release positions the series as part of HBO’s continued investment in premium limited programming.
While specific story details remain under wraps, Warner Bros. Discovery states that The Chain expands the mythology of McKinty’s award-winning thriller. Lindelof said in the announcement that the novel’s premise is “wild, weird, and exhilarating,” adding that he was drawn to adapting the story as a serialized television thriller.
Lindelof’s expanded relationship with HBO comes at a time of heightened industry visibility. Previous mxdwn coverage highlighted his involvement in the DC Universe revamp project, Lanterns, where he was revealed as a key creative working with DC Studios. That reporting reflected the industry’s continued interest in Lindelof’s storytelling across both prestige drama and franchise-driven projects.
He has also remained active in broader industry conversations. A prior mxdwn article noted Lindelof’s public stance on creative labor issues, including his pledge not to work with ABC during a dispute involving Jimmy Kimmel Live!, underscoring his willingness to engage with larger industry concerns beyond his scripted work.
According to the press release, The Chain will be produced by Media Res, the studio behind series such as The Morning Show. The order further strengthens HBO’s slate as the network continues to prioritize high-profile creative partnerships.
Warner Bros. Discovery has not announced a premiere date. Additional casting and production details are expected to be revealed as development continues. With The Chain, HBO continues to expand its limited-series lineup while reinforcing its focus on ambitious, creator-driven television.
