J-pop star, actor, and model Ren Meguro (Phases of the Moon, Silent) is latest addition to FX‘s Shōgun, where he will play Kazutada, Deadline reports.
“I am incredibly honored to join the cast of Shōgun season two,” Meguro said in a statement via Deadline. “When I streamed Shōgun on Disney+ last year, I was profoundly moved by the series’ unique and grand portrayal of Japan, which felt different from past portrayals. As a Japanese person, I felt a compelling urge to be part of this groundbreaking production.”
“I am committed to honoring the legacy that so many have built before me and to carefully shaping the role entrusted to me in this remarkable series. I can’t wait for everyone to see the release of Shōgun season two and to share in this incredible journey with us,” added Meguro, who is a member of the J-pop boy band Snow Man as well as a winner of numerous TV and film awards who currently represents fashion house Fendi as a global ambassador, according to Deadline.
Adapted from James Clavell’s novel of the same name, Shōgun tells the story of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who fights for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne, shares vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tip the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war, according to an official synopsis provided by Deadline.
Per Deadline, the show’s second season is set 10 years after the events of the first and will continue the historical-fiction retelling of the lives of Toranaga and Blackthorne, two men whose meeting brings about a collision of two starkly different worlds.
Returning stars include Hiroyuki Sanada (Bullet Train, The Twilight Samurai), Cosmo Jarvis (Warfare, Calm with Horses), Fumi Nikaidô (Vivant, Himizu), Shinnosuke Abe (A Missing Part, Kazoku), Hiroto Kanai (Lotus Kitchen, Labyrinth of Cinema), Yoriko Dôguchi (Silence, Cure), Tommy Bastow (The Window, M.I.High), Yuko Miyamoto (First Love, Rain Fall), Eita Okuno (Alice in Borderland, The Outsider), and Yuka Kouri (Hell for You, September 1923), while Meguro will feature alongside season two newcomers Asami Mizukawa (Zero Day Attack, Dark Water), Masataka Kubota (Hero’s Island, 13 Assassins), Sho Kaneta (Ultraman Arc, A Queen and an Old Maid), Takaaki Enoki (Get Ready!, Heaven and Earth), and Jun Kunimura (Trillion Game, Kill Bill: Vol. 1), according to Deadline.
Shōgun is created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks (Top Gun: Maverick, The Jungle Book) for FX Productions, per Deadline. Marks and Kondo are executive producers alongside Michaela Clavell (Octopussy, The Children’s Story), Edward L. McDonnell (Say Nothing, Sicario), Michael De Luca (American Rust, The Social Network), and Sanada.
The new season is set to begin production in January in Vancouver, according to Deadline. Upon release, viewers will be able to watch the second season through FX and Hulu, while the series will be available internationally through Disney+. Season one is streaming on Hulu now.
