A potential spinoff to FX’s critically acclaimed Snowfall is coming to fruition. According to Deadline, the network has ordered the 1990s-set drama series, with original series stars Gail Bean (P-Valley, Paradise Lost) and Isaiah John (All Day and a Night, Barbershop: The Next Cut) set as leads. The show is set to premiere next year on FX and stream on Hulu.
Created by the late John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, Poetic Justice), Dave Andron (Justified, Jusitfied: City Primeval), and Eric Amadio (After Sex, Stuntment), Snowfall chronicled the crack epidemic through the eyes of a young South Los Angeles youth named Franklin Saint. Through six seasons, the series addressed the crippling impact the war on drugs had on the African American community, and the government officials who had their hands in orchestrating the demise.
According to Deadline, the untitled new series will pick up a few years after the events of Snowfall, placing our two protagonists in the early 90s, where the pains of the previous years give birth to a new enterprise: hip-hop music. Bean’s Wanda, a recovering addict, will pursue a career in the music industry with her husband Leon, played by John, by her side. The series will explore the rise and exploitation of hip-hop and the real-life gang activity that inspired the acts who go from underground to mainstream.
The spinoff will be written and executive-produced by Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bel-Air). Deadline lists that Andron, Amadio, Trevor Engelson (Untold, Dream Team), Julie DeJoie (Manhattan, Invasion), Michael London (Alice & Jack, The Magicians), and Thomas Schlamme (Murder in the First, The West Wing) are also exec producers.
“This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution,” President of FX Entertainment, Nick Grad, told Deadline. “We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered and he has encyclopedic knowledge of this material. This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean and, as always, Isaiah John is terrific along with the ensemble cast. Snowfall was one of the most successful FX dramas ever and we’re excited that Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme and other veterans of the Snowfall creative team are on board.”
In additon to Bean and John, Deadline reports additional casting includes Peyton Alex Smith (Detroit, All American: Homecoming), Simmie Sims III, and Asante Blackk (This Is Us, Story Ave.).
All six seasons of Snowfall are available to stream on Hulu.
