The Co-CEO of Netflix, Greg Peters, recently dismissed rumors that Netflix would be interested in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery. According to Deadline, after the recent merger with Skydance Media, Paramount had looked into making an offer to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. The conversation has opened the door to other companies that could potentially try to place a bid for the David Zaslav-led company.
Deadline mentions that Peters stated at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles, “We come from a deep heritage of being builders rather than buyers. One should have a reasonable amount of skepticism around big media mergers. They don’t have an amazing track record over time.”
The buzz on Wall Street is also not favorable for mergers. According to Deadline, the high cost of $70 billion needed to acquire WBD would not be worth the less impressive assets of the company. WBD has just announced that it will be splitting into two separate companies next April. One will be the network, and the other will be the streaming and studio company.
Deadline reported earlier on Wednesday that Zaslav allegedly stirred the Netflix scenario. Otherwise, if Paramount acquires WBD, this could leave Zaslav without an executive position. When Peters was asked about the odds of the proposal, he gave a rather neutral response.
“ Yeah. Our job is to figure out what is the best way to grow the business. We have to think really carefully about how we invest our capital, our time, and our attention? And if that’s the best way to do it, great. And if it’s not, we should do something else,” he told Deadline.
Later, he responded that a range of social games, such as Boggle, will be added to their main interface, with mobile phones being used as controllers, via Deadline. Peters also acknowledged that while their multi-year deal with the NFL for the doubleheader on Christmas Day was profitable, they may not revisit this bid in 2029 when the rights become available.
“It doesn’t really fit with our strategy,” Peters said via Deadline, regarding that type of live event.
