Deadline mentions that Hilary Duff (Lizzy McGuire, Time Cut) will star in and executive produce Hulu’s new drama, Pretty Ugly. Based on the 2015 novel written by Kirker Butler (Family Guy, Ted), Pretty Ugly follows a mother and successful beauty queen, Miranda Miller, trying to make her 10-year-old daughter the most successful child pageant contestant in the United States.
According to Deadline, Duff plays Miranda, who imagines a world of endorsement deals, beauty brands, and a possible TV show for her daughter, Bailey, who wants nothing to do with the pageant world after doing them since she was three months old. Not only is Miranda busy planning Bailey’s life, but she’s also coordinating the pageant life for her unborn seven-month-old child. The drama continues with Miranda’s husband, Ray, a nurse addicted to pills. Ray has an affair with a hospice patient’s granddaughter, knocking her up. And last but not least, Miranda’s mother, Joan, is a hermit who thinks she’s plotting a murder with Jesus Christ himself.
According to Deadline, Duff recently appeared on Hulu’s How I Met Your Mother spin-off, How I Met Your Father. Both were produced by 20th TV. She also starred in the comedy Younger, which found syndicated popularity years later on Netflix. Duff is currently repped by CAA, Linden Entertainment, and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks.
Deadline reports Pretty Ugly is the latest collaboration between Butler and Aaron Kaplan’s (The Chi, The Unicorn) Kaptial Entertainment. Previously, Butler worked on other Kapital Entertainment series such as The Neighbors for ABC and Life in Pieces on CBS. He has representation from WME and Jackoway. Director Silver Tree (Suits LA) just wrapped the pilot, Off Campus, for Prime Video, which she also executive-produced. Tree also served as director and executive producer on Netflix’s No Good Deed, Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction, and the second season of HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant. She is repped by CAA and Circle Management+ Productions.
