According to Comicbook, SYFY’s latest supernatural thriller, Revival, premiered on June 12 to strong critical acclaim, tallying an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score. Based on the Image Comics series by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton, the show reimagines the undead not as monsters, but as people eerily unchanged since death.
According to Comicbook, the show set in Wausau, Wisconsin, follows Officer Dana Cypress (Melanie Scrofano, Wynonna Earp, Ready or Not) as she investigates a murder amid a surreal new reality. Known as “Revival Day,” the unexplained resurrection event creates fear, suspicion, and paranoia among the townsfolk.
Comicbook lists the 10-episode series opens with a tense premiere, exploring the immediate chaos of the dead reawakening and the government’s desperate attempts to control the situation. From quarantine zones to hushed community meetings, Wausau becomes a simmering pressure cooker of emotion and unease. Dana’s journey is both professional and personal, as she contends with her strained relationship with her father, Sheriff Wayne Cypress (David James Elliott, JAG, NCIS: Los Angeles), and her sister Em (Romy Weltman, Ginny & Georgia, Creeped Out)—who is among the “revivers.” Her internal conflict mirrors the town’s broader unraveling.
Critics are already praising Scrofano’s layered performance as a strong, flawed, and grounded protagonist, via Comicbook. The series is also drawing attention for its genre-bending style, infusing supernatural horror with crime drama and flashes of dry humor. This tone sets it apart from standard undead fare, appealing to both horror fans and mystery lovers alike.
What makes Revival especially promising is its rich source material. According to Comicbook, the original comic book, which ran from 2012 to 2017 across 47 issues, was lauded for its complex, long-form storytelling and multiple Eisner Award nominations, including Best New Series. As the show unfolds, viewers can expect a gradual deepening of the mystery. The comic’s narrative included the rise of cults, government cover-ups, and growing fears that not all revivers were as human as they appeared. These storylines offer fertile ground for future episodes. The supernatural roots of the phenomenon are also hinted to be more ancient and disturbing than first imagined. As secrets unravel, both Dana’s family and the town itself may be forced to confront uncomfortable truths.
