The fourth episode of Bosch: Legacy, titled “Whippoorwills”, sees Bosch and Preston Borders face their day in front of a grand jury about the alleged conspiracy to murder Kurt Dockweiler. Meanwhile, Maddie and Reina receive information on the new car thief operation, and Honey Chandler goes on the offensive with D.A. Archer.
Our episode opens with Detectives Jimmy Robertson and Perry Lopez questioning Curtis Dignan. They attempt to get him talking about this cellmate, Preston Borders, even kindling a potential offer. But Dignan doesn’t budge.
As the two detectives prepare for Preston Borders’ testimony, Honey Chandler is strategizing after the Bosch bombshell. She goes on the offensive and works to keep her endorsement from The LA Times’ board intact. She promises a reporter the arrest and conviction of officers charged with wrongful death in exchange for a moment to speak with the editorial board.
Bosch and Mo prepare to investigate McShane’s business partner, Bing Cherry Crowder. The former gang member who went to prison for murder is championed as a reformed businessman. Mo remotely infiltrates Bing’s business computer to set up a false meeting with McShane. Bosch surprises Bing and questions him about the Gallaghers and McShane. He only admits to purchasing reduced equipment from the company.
Maddie and Reina interview a CI named Lisa, who tells them about a new crew. While she has no names, Lisa knows they sell their merchandise to clients in Hollywood recording studios. Off this tip, Maddie and Reina find the care a license plate matching the vehicle from previous stings. Later, Maddie tells Reina she’s been asked to speak with Internal Affairs about the call she received about Docweiler’s death.
It’s the day of the grand jury testimony. Bosch and Borders arrive at the courthouse. During questioning, they both invoke their 5th amendment rights; Bosch about Dignan and Preston about the burner phone.
Bosch makes a personal visit to Shelia Walsh to pressure more from her. She remains adamant that the Gallahgers went on vacation. Curious, she infiltrates McShane’s bank statements and finds various large deposits. As she leaves Bosch a voicemail about her discovery, McShane overhears her from the office’s hallway.
Later that night, Bosch sees Sheila’s message and drives to the business. But he’s too late. Sheila lies dead inside McShane’s office.
This episode was solid, answering some questions while introducing new characters. The only sour spot is the Maddie and Reina storyline, which tends to drag. The criminal trio presents an interesting dynamic similar to an L&O: Criminal Intent episode. But the chase isn’t nearly as interesting. Overall, a good episode that produced a great cliffhanger for the next installment.
