Variety exclusively reports FX has picked up the long-rumored Snowfall spinoff series for a pilot. The crime drama series that ended two years ago will see two of its co-leads, Gail Bean (P-Valley, Both Eyes Open) and Isaiah John (All Day and a Night, When the Streetlights Go On), take center stage in a story that follows the events of the original series.
Created by the late John Singleton (Higher Learning, Poetic Justice), Eric Amadio (After Sex, Stuntmen), and Dave Andron (Justified, Pats Life), Snowfall chronicled the atmospheric rise, spread, and crippling impact of the United States crack cocaine epidemic. Seen through the eyes of an aspiring LA native with good intentions, viewers witnessed the many sides, villains, and allies within the decades-long ordeal. Isaiah portrayed Leon Simmons, the best friend of fallen drug kingpin Franklin Saint, who at the end of the original series, followed his wife, Bean’s Wanda, to Africa to escape the tumultuous violence taking over 1980s Los Angeles streets.
According to Variety, the spinoff was first discussed in 2023 ahead of the series finale. In one of the series’ final scenes, Leon mentions Wanda’s dreams of making it in the music business. It appears this fantasy will be the center narrative of the new series. The official logline reads: “Set in 90s Los Angeles soon after the end of the original series, a recovering addict strives to take West Coast rap mainstream despite potential infighting from a harrowing gang war.”
Variety reports Malcolm Spellman (Empire, Bel-Air) will write the pilot and executive produce with Trevor Engelson (Dream Team, Heathers), Julie DeJoie (Pan Am, Invasion), Andron, Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing, Sports Night), and Michael London (Alice & Jack, Sideways) with FX Productions.
Snowfall premiered in 2017 and starred Damson Idris (F1, Black Mirror), Simmons, Bean, Carter Hudson (The Wilds, A Crime to Remember), Angela Lewis (Code Black, The Last Ship), Amin Joseph (Send Help, One of Them Days), Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Rambo: Last Blood, Life Itself), Emily Rios (Made for Love, If Beale Street Could Talk), Alon Aboutboul (Body of Lies, London Has Fallen), and Michael Hyatt (The Pitt, Nightcrawler).
All six seasons of Snowfall are available to stream on FX.
