Fans of the CBS show SWAT, will be disappointed to hear the series is being cancelled…again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS has announced that SWAT will not be renewed for a ninth season. The show has previously been cancelled, and then un-cancelled, twice.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted showrunner and executive producer Andrew Dettman (Wisdom of the Crowd, The Pretender). “It’s heartbreaking news, primarily because it’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we’ve always been proud of.”
“They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can’t give them enough credit,” Dettman added.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, CBS originally axed SWAT after its sixth season in 2023 but later reconsidered, declaring the seventh season as its final run. However, in a surprising twist, the network announced in April 2024 that the show would continue for an eighth season after all. Amy Resienbach, president of CBS entertainment, stated the following in response to the addition of the eight season “Here at CBS, we always ‘stay liquid’ and love a good dramatic twist, especially when it leads to an eighth season of SWAT.”
SWAT, adapted from the 1975 ABC series, stars Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds, Diary of a Mad Black Woman) as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, whose character was originally played by Steve Forrest (The Baron, Mommie Dearest). The series’s executive production team includes Shawn Ryan (The Night Agent, The Shield), Dettmann, Justin Lin (Fast Five, Fast and Furious), Neal H. Moritz (Fast Five, Fast and Furious), Marney Hochman (Timeless, Last Resort), Pavun Shetty (Gen V, Goosebumps), Billy Gierhart (The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy), Moore and James Scura (Angie Tribeca, Leverage).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan stated “It’s been an extraordinary privilege to work on SWAT for eight seasons and tell the stories of Hondo and 20-Squad.” He continued, “I thank our fans, Shemar Moore, the rest of our cast, our producers, Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios and CBS for the opportunity. Most of all I want to thank our tireless, dedicated crew who made our writers, directors and cast always look good. My greatest concern right now is for them.”
