According to Deadline, voice actor and comedian George Lowe, who is renowned for his role as Space Ghost on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, passed away on Sunday, March 2 at the age of 67. Lowe also voiced Space Ghost on Cartoon Planet, and voiced the Dad on The Brak Show.
Deadline reported on a Facebook message written by Lowe’s close friend “Marvelous Martin” Boone.
“I’m beyond devastated,” Boone posted. “My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me had also died. He was a supremely talented Artist and Voice actor. A true warm hearted Genius. Funniest man on Earth too. I’ve stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine. He was also the voice of Space Ghost and so much more. Pweeloto.”
According to Deadline, Lowe was born in Dunedin, FL and began his radio career at 15, securing a job at the local radio station WWJB. By the late 1980s and mid-1990s, he was doing a little voice-over work for TBWS and Cartoon Network, eventually landing his most iconic role as Space Ghost in 1994. That year, Space Ghost Coast to Coast debuted, transforming the classic Hanna-Barbera superhero into a satirical talk show host who interviewed live-action celebrity guests. The series originally ran on Cartoon Network from 1994 to 1999, later making a comeback on Adult Swim from 2001 to 2004 as part of its late-night lineup.
Lowe is also known for his roles voicing Officer George in Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Aquadonk Side Pieces, several characters in Robot Chicken, Cyrus Mooney in American Dad and Sgt. Colliver in Liberty: Vigilance. His Space Ghost Character also appeared in Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion, and Cartoon Superheroes Abridged.
As confirmed by Deadline, Lowe last revived his Space Ghost character in an episode of Max’s series Jellystone that premiered Feb. 2024.
