As noted by Deadline, Reese Witherspoon (Big Little Lies, The Morning Show) is deciding who will play Elle Woods in the Prime Video prequel series Elle. The news was announced in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (Almost Famous, Jurassic World) episode, which mainly focused on promoting her comedy with Will Ferrell (Daddy’s Home, Step Brothers) You’re Cordially Invited. The prequel series was based on Witherspoon watching Wednesday, the show starring Jenna Ortega (The Fallout, Stuck in the Middle) on Netflix. The actor quickly became a fan of the horror-comedy series.
“I was like, ‘We should do Elle Woods in high school,’ because I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school, and I started having all these ideas, and these amazing writers came up with a great pitch and now Amazon is making the show and it’s called Elle.” Witherspoon commented.
“And now, I have to pick a girl to play the young me,” the former Elle Woods actor said, continuing that there are “so many” audition tapes “and it’s so fun to watch.” The actor also made jokes with Jimmy Fallon after suggesting he wanted to play Elle.
“I just love them all so much and they’re doing such a good job,” she said when describing how the girls who are auditioning are now creatively shooting their audition “like their own little movie.” Witherspoon also recalls how she did auditions back in the day via a casting office and other people were in charge of the work. The girls auditioning are their own “filming” “producing”, “costuming,” and things of that nature.
“But they’re killing it, and now it’s a really hard decision,” she concluded. Watch the interview below!
The official logline of Elle via a Deadline exclusive interview is as follows: “Elle is created by Laura Kittrell (Insecure, High School) and follows Woods in high school, before she goes on to dominate the hallowed grounds of Harvard Law School.”
In an interview with People, Witherspoon announced the series will have an official photoshoot in March and how her casting role has been unbelievable. Legally Blonde 3 was green light in 2018 and Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Threat Level Midnight) and Mindy Kaling (The Office, Inside Out) will be writing the script.
