According to Deadline, Melissa McCarthy (Nine Perfect Strangers, Mike & Molly) and Clive Owen (Closer, Children of Men) are set to star in a new anthology series on Paramount+, with the working title Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The true crime drama, which is being produced by Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, will premiere its first season by diving into the haunting and highly publicized case of JonBenét Ramsey. The announcement coincided with McCarthy’s appearance at the Golden Globes on January 5.
The series will explore the lives of Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey, played by McCarthy and Owen, respectively. According to the series logline, the storyline examines the complex layers of their marriage, their roles as parents and the carefully curated image of their seemingly privileged life. This carefully constructed facade unraveled following the tragic events of Christmas night in 1996, forever altering their family’s narrative.
Filming is currently underway in Calgary, Canada, with Richard LaGravenese (Freedom Writers, Behind the Candelabra), an Academy Award nominee, serving as showrunner and executive producer. Anne Sewitsky (Presumed Innocent) is directing half of the eight episodes, including the pilot, and also joins the production team as an executive producer. Other executive producers include David C. Glasser (Yellowstone, 1883), Ron Burkle (The Giver), Bob Yari (Crash), David Hutkin (Monster) and McCarthy herself. Writers Harrison Query (Three Musketeers) and Tommy Wallach (Thanks for the Trouble), who originally pitched the concept to MTV and 101 Studios, are also part of the executive producing team.
Paramount+ has described the anthology series as an exploration of America’s most gripping and tragic unsolved crimes, with each season focusing on a different case. The first installment features an extensive cast including Emily Mitchell (Ordinary Angels), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Owen Teague (It, Bloodline), Shea Whigham (Take Shelter), Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek), Rory Cochrane (Encounter), Will Patton (The Postman), Chris Bauer (The Wire, True Blood), Angus Caldwell (Unsung Hero), John Billingsley (Star Trek: Enterprise), Jeremy Bobb (Russian Doll, The Knick), Jaime Ray Newman (Eureka, Catch Me If You Can), Josh Stamberg (The Affair) and guest star Margo Martindale (The Sticky, Your Honor, The Watcher).
